Psychotherapy and diagnostic evaluations are often covered by health insurance carriers.
The insurance carrier might pay all or part of the cost, and there might be deductibles,
out-of-pocket expenses, and co-payments that you are expected to pay.
You will therefore need to check with your carrier to determine what your individual
mental health plan covers. Dr. Long participates with some plans and will work as
an out-of-network provider with others. You will need to call her office to inquire.
There are pros and cons of utilizing insurance. The pros are that there is reimbursement
for some or all of your therapy or evaluation. However, the cons include having
a psychiatric diagnosis, the loss of confidentiality, and having an insurance company
make decisions regarding the nature and extent of your treatment. Most insurance
companies limit the number of sessions they will cover. Managed care insurance companies
often require information about you in order to authorize services, which may include
history, diagnosis, progress notes, reports, and treatment plans. Other insurance
companies might also require such information from time to time. Dr. Long has no
control over such information once it is released.
